Prevention Tips to Reduce Accidental Window Falls

Date : 26 Juillet 2019

Young children sometimes act in unusual and unpredictable ways, so open windows represent a significant danger for them. Each year, there are more than 400 young children in emergencies following an accidental falls to the window in Canada.

No safety measures are currently imposed by the National Building Code. Until it is recast in 2020, only municipalities are responsible for making provisions.

Here are some simple prevention tips to help prevent such an incident from happening:

  • For windows that are more than 35 inches (89 cm) from the floor, install a safety device that limits the opening to a 4-inch (10 cm) safe space. It must reset automatically when the window is closed and must be deactivated voluntarily in case of emergency.
  • If you do not install a safety device, keep the windows accessible closed and locked in the presence of your children.
  • Watch your children when they are on the first floor and teach them not to play near the windows.
  • Keep furniture away from windows to avoid a potentially dangerous climb for your little monkeys
  • A window screen is not considered as a sufficient safety device because it is not designed to prevent a fall and will break easily under the weight of the child.
  • Teach your kids safety rules around windows. Safety comes first and foremost through education.
