Humidity is an essential element to consider in your home, as it can have an impact on your well-being. Be sure to monitor and control humidity levels to maintain an optimal indoor environment.
To determine whether your home has a humidity problem, you can use an instrument called a hygrometer, also known as a humidity sensor or relative humidity indicator. This device measures the relative humidity (RH) of the air, expressed as a percentage.
Here are some important points to remember about the hygrometer and relative humidity:

  • RH of 100% : When air at a given temperature contains all the water vapour it can hold, its RH is 100%. If RH exceeds 100%, water vapour begins to condense.
  • Variation in RH: The RH of an air sample can vary with changes in temperature, even if the absolute quantity of water vapor in the air remains constant.
  • Types of hygrometers: There are two types of hygrometer suitable for domestic use: mechanical hygrometers and electronic hygrometers. The choice depends on your preferences, but both types can work well if calibrated and used correctly.
  • Calibration: For accurate measurements, it's important to calibrate your hygrometer. Information on how to do this can be found in the user manual.

The ideal values for humidity levels in a home can vary depending on a number of factors, including the season, the type of house and even the different rooms in the house. In general, during the heating season, maintaining RH between 30 and 50% is recommended to avoid condensation on windows. In winter, humidity problems can be solved by eliminating sources of excessive humidity, improving the airtightness of the house and, if necessary, using humidifiers. However, the use of humidifiers must be monitored to avoid excessive humidity and mold problems.
